Land Rover Redesigns its Iconic Defender

Land Rover has announced that its iconic Defender will be re-designed for 2015, the first complete makeover in its 63 year history. The company insists the next model will stay true to its rugged past but will also appeal to mainstream Land Rover/Range Rover buyers by including luxury options. The Defender will make its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show on September 13.
The Defender dates back to the original Land Rover Series 1, which was created in 1948 to serve the same general purpose as the U.S. Army's Jeep. The later "Station Wagon" body style -- typically with the spare tire mounted on the hood -- is the one closely associated with any movie featuring an African safari.
Land Rover's utilitarian off-road SUV became known as the Defender Ninety and Defender One Ten in 1985. These models were changed to the numerical 90 and 110 from 1991 on and continue to be sold in Great Britain today. They are also the British Army's primary troop vehicles, much like Humvee is to US troops. Defenders are rare in the US, and no decision has been made by Land Rover as to whether the Defender will be available in North America.
